al|ka|loid «AL kuh loyd», noun, adjective.
–n.
any one of a large group of alkaline substances containing nitrogen and found in or obtained from many plants. Atropine, quinine, nicotine, morphine, caffeine, strychnine, and cocaine are alkaloids. Most alkaloids are colorless, crystalline, have a bitter taste, are used as drugs, and may be highly poisonous.
